Tragedy struck Zixing City in central China's Hunan Province as Typhoon Gaemi unleashed heavy rains, resulting in the loss of 30 lives and leaving 35 people missing, local authorities reported on Thursday.
The storm caused widespread devastation, but relief efforts are underway. Roads, electricity, and communications have been largely restored in the eight most affected townships of Zixing, allowing rescue teams to continue their search for the missing.
In response to the severe flooding, China's National Disaster Reduction Commission elevated the emergency response to Level II, the second-highest alert in their four-tier warning system. As of 7 a.m. Thursday, over 1.2 million residents in Hunan have been impacted by the heavy rainfall.
Local authorities remain dedicated to restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety of all residents as the region grapples with the aftermath of Typhoon Gaemi.
