Xizang’s Ecological Security Barrier Achieves Major Milestones

Recent studies conducted by Chinese scientists have highlighted that the Xizang Autonomous Region remains one of the areas with the highest ecological quality globally. The implementation of the ecological security barrier construction project in Xizang has yielded significant benefits, positioning the region as a model for environmental conservation.

Wang Xiaodan, a researcher at the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment (IMHE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized that Xizang has successfully preserved the authenticity of its ecosystems, maintaining a rate of ecological change below one percent. This stability is significantly lower compared to other regions in China, providing a strong foundation for the national ecological security barrier.

To ensure the effectiveness of the ecological security measures, ten monitoring stations have been established across Xizang. These stations provide essential technical and data support for evaluating the functioning of the ecological security barrier.

Improvements in carbon sequestration, water source conservation, soil conservation, and sand fixation have been notable in Xizang. Additionally, there has been a positive growth in the populations of wild animals and plants. One of the most remarkable achievements is the increase in the number of Tibetan antelopes, rising from approximately 70,000 to nearly 300,000.
