Typhoon Gaemi Impacts Over 628,000 in China’s Fujian Province

Over 628,000 people in China's Fujian Province have been affected by Typhoon Gaemi, the third typhoon of the year, according to data from the province's flood control and drought relief headquarters. In response, Fujian upgraded its emergency response level for natural disaster relief to Level III, the third highest in a four-tier system, following Gaemi's landfall.

As of Friday morning, Gaemi was located in Sanming City of Fujian and is expected to move northwest at approximately 20 kilometers per hour, reaching Jiangxi Province by evening. The storm is projected to weaken as it continues northward.

China's National Meteorological Center has issued an orange alert, the second-highest alert level, for the typhoon. Regions affected by Gaemi, including southern Taiwan, Fujian, southern Zhejiang, eastern Guangdong, and central and eastern Jiangxi, are anticipated to experience heavy rainfall until Saturday morning.

On Thursday, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters and the Ministry of Emergency Management convened a meeting to coordinate flood and typhoon control and relief efforts with departments of meteorology, water resources, natural resources, and housing and urban-rural development. Expert teams have been dispatched to Fujian, Zhejiang, Hebei, Sichuan, and Anhui provinces to support flood control and disaster relief operations.

The Ministry of Emergency Management has mobilized over 4,500 engineering rescue personnel, more than 1,600 sets of equipment, and eight helicopters for aviation rescue in key areas such as Zhejiang and Fujian. Additionally, the Ministry of Water Resources raised the emergency response for flood control in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces to Level III, and the Ministry of Transport elevated the typhoon response to Level II, resulting in the suspension of all passenger trains in Fujian on Thursday.
