A scorching heat wave has ravaged Morocco, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 21 lives within a single day in the central city of Beni Mellal, according to the country's health ministry.
Temperatures soared to a blistering 48°C in parts of North Africa from Monday to Wednesday, with Beni Mellal enduring blistering 43°C on Thursday. The relentless heat primarily affected vulnerable groups, including the elderly and individuals with chronic illnesses, exacerbating their health conditions.
\"The majority of deaths involved people suffering from chronic illnesses and the elderly, with high temperatures contributing to the deterioration of their health conditions,\" stated the regional health directorate.
While it remains unclear if this marks the highest death toll due to a heat wave in Morocco, authorities are monitoring the situation closely. In a welcome turn, temperatures in popular tourist destinations like Marrakesh are anticipated to drop by 10°C by Sunday, offering some relief.
The meteorology department forecasts a gradual decrease in temperatures in the coming days, providing hope for recovery and safer conditions across the nation.
