A new chapter of joy unfolds at the Chongqing Zoo in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, as a captive giant panda, Haoqi, has given birth to a healthy cub. This marks Haoqi’s second successful delivery at the zoo, highlighting the institution's ongoing commitment to giant panda conservation.
The newborn cub, a female, arrived on June 28 after Haoqi successfully mated with a male panda at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in late February, as confirmed by the zoo. At birth, the cub weighed 185 grams and has been thriving under the attentive care of its mother and dedicated zoo staff. After more than 20 days, the cub now weighs 772 grams, showing promising growth.
Haoqi, a resident of Chongqing Zoo since her birth in 2013, previously gave birth to a pair of cubs in 2021. The zoo has a rich history of raising giant pandas, dating back to the 1960s, and has successfully bred 32 litters to date since the 1980s.
The Chongqing Zoo continues to play a pivotal role in the conservation and research of giant pandas, contributing to the global efforts to protect this beloved species.
