Tragedy struck in Utah's Canyonlands National Park this past weekend as two hikers, a father and his daughter, were found deceased amid soaring temperatures.
The San Juan County Sheriff's Office reported on Monday that the National Park Service discovered the hikers in the Upheaval Dome area at 5:45 p.m. on Friday. Shortly after, a second body was located in the same remote region.
According to officials, the pair became lost while navigating a trail in the rugged northwest portion of San Juan County. Emergency 911 texts from the hikers alerted the Utah Department of Public Safety that they were lost and had run out of water.
Due to the challenging terrain and the remote location, the Sheriff's Office coordinated with the Department of Public Safety's helicopter team to attempt a rescue early Saturday morning. Despite these efforts, the father and daughter were found deceased.
This heartbreaking incident underscores the importance of preparation and caution when hiking in extreme weather conditions. Visitors to national parks are urged to stay informed about weather forecasts and to carry adequate supplies when exploring remote areas.
