China Achieves Significant Improvements in Marine Environment, Reports New White Paper

China has made substantial progress in enhancing its marine environment, as detailed in a recent white paper released by China's State Council Information Office on Thursday. The report highlights increased land-sea coordination and enhanced river-sea connectivity as key strategies in this achievement.

Offshore water quality has seen a remarkable improvement, with the proportion of sea areas classified as having good to excellent water quality rising by 21.3 percentage points from 2012 to 2023. Additionally, China has established 352 marine protected areas and implemented 150,000 square kilometers of red lines across various ecosystems. By the end of 2023, approximately half of the 1,682 key tasks and construction projects outlined in the white paper had been completed.
