Assam Floods Claim 46 Lives, Affect Over 1.6 Million Residents

The northeastern state of Assam in India is grappling with severe floods that have already claimed 46 lives and impacted over 1.6 million people. As the heavy rains continue, 29 districts remain submerged, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

On Wednesday alone, eight more deaths were reported, bringing the toll to 46. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has highlighted the extensive damage, with 2,800 villages inundated and over 39,451 hectares of crops destroyed across the affected regions.

In response to the escalating situation, local administrations have ramped up rescue and relief operations. There are currently 181 relief camps and 334 distribution centers set up to support those affected. To date, 386,959 people, including 8,551 children, have received food and shelter.

Despite these efforts, the challenges remain daunting as Assam continues to battle the relentless floods. The community’s resilience is being tested, and ongoing support is crucial to mitigate the impact of this natural disaster.
