Athens Suburbs Battle Devastating Wildfires, One Fatality Reported

Intense forest fires that swept through the outer suburbs of Athens over the weekend have been successfully contained, authorities reported on Monday.

The disaster was fueled by fierce winds reaching speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour and prolonged dry conditions, which made the region particularly vulnerable. On Sunday, two separate fires ignited: one in the seaside resort of Keratea, located east of the capital, and another in the suburban area of Stamata.

As flames rapidly spread, emergency services initiated evacuations to ensure the safety of residents. Tragically, amid the chaos in Stamata, a 45-year-old man suffered a cardiac arrest while attempting to flee the blazing inferno, leading to his untimely death.

The wildfires have left a trail of destruction, wiping out several houses and cars in their path. Firefighters worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control, preventing further loss and damage.

Authorities are now assessing the full extent of the impact and are committed to providing support to those affected by the devastating fires.
