June Heatwave Claims Lives of Over 200 Threatened Howler Monkeys in Mexico

In a tragic outcome of natureโ€™s fury, over 200 threatened howler monkeys lost their lives in the sweltering heatwave that swept across Mexico's tropical forests in June. The wildlife non-profit Cobius reported that at least 234 howler monkeys perished in the southeastern state of Tabasco by June 24.

This alarming figure marks a nearly threefold increase from the previous month, a direct consequence of the unprecedented nationwide heatwave gripping the region. Cobius emphasized that the reported deaths only cover the surveyed areas, suggesting that the actual toll could be significantly higher.

The mantled howler monkey, inhabiting Mexico, Central America, Colombia, and Ecuador, is listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. The recent devastation highlights the urgent need for effective conservation measures to protect these primates from the escalating impacts of climate change.
