The annual Hajj pilgrimage, a spiritual journey for millions, turned tragic this year as scorching temperatures in Mecca led to a significant loss of life. According to an Arab diplomat cited by AFP, the death toll among Egyptians has surged to at least 600, all attributed to extreme heat reaching 51.8Β°C on Monday.
Previously, Arab officials reported at least 323 Egyptian fatalities, but the latest figures highlight the severe impact of the relentless heatwave. The pilgrimage saw around 1.8 million participants from various nationalities, facing unprecedented temperatures during their sacred journey.
Tragically, the toll extends beyond Egypt. A Saudi diplomat informed AFP that 68 Indian nationals lost their lives, alongside four Russians and at least 35 Tunisians, as reported by TASS and the Tunisian Foreign Ministry respectively.
This year's Hajj underscores the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions, raising concerns about the safety measures in place for millions undertaking this vital religious obligation.
