Record Heatwave in Cyprus Claims First Life

Cyprus is grappling with an early summer heatwave that has already claimed its first life. On Friday, a 91-year-old woman tragically passed away at Nicosia General Hospital due to heatstroke amidst record-breaking temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius.

Health officials reported that the elderly woman suffered a cardiac arrest twice upon arrival at the accident and emergency department, ultimately succumbing to the extreme heat. Additionally, five other elderly patients are currently receiving treatment for severe heatstroke symptoms.

The state health organization issued its first red alert of the summer in response to the unprecedented heat. Meteorological data confirmed that Friday's temperatures marked the hottest June day ever recorded on the Mediterranean holiday island.

Hospitals across Cyprus have been under intense pressure, dealing with multiple cases of heat exhaustion over the past few days. The surge in temperatures highlights the growing concerns over climate change and its impact on vulnerable populations.

As Cyprus continues to navigate this extreme weather event, authorities are urging residents to take necessary precautions to stay safe during the ongoing heatwave.
