Climate Change Amplifies Mosquito-Borne Disease Threat in Europe

Climate change is reshaping Europe's landscape in more ways than one. New data released Tuesday by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) highlights a growing threat: the spread of invasive mosquito species, which are driving an increase in mosquito-borne diseases across the continent.

Among these invasive species, the tiger mosquito, scientifically known as Aedes albopictus, is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia. However, this resilient mosquito has now established populations in over a dozen European countries, including Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, and Germany. The ECDC reports that the ongoing climate shift is primarily responsible for facilitating the northward expansion of these mosquitoes, posing new challenges to public health in Europe.
