China’s Mangrove Forests Flourish: 7,000 Hectares Planted Since 2020

In a significant environmental milestone, China has successfully planted approximately 7,000 hectares of mangrove forests between 2020 and 2023. This impressive effort positions China among the few nations globally that saw an increase in mangrove forest coverage in 2023, as highlighted in a report released by the Ministry of Natural Resources on World Oceans Day.

Mangroves are crucial coastal ecosystems comprised of trees and shrubs thriving in the intertidal zones. Historically, China's mangrove coverage declined sharply from 50,000 hectares in the 1950s to 22,000 hectares by 2000. Recognizing the ecological importance of these habitats, China has dedicated the past two decades to reversing this trend, implementing reforestation projects and conservation initiatives to restore these vital green belts.

The resurgence of mangrove forests not only aids in combating coastal erosion and providing habitats for diverse marine life but also plays a role in carbon sequestration, contributing to global efforts against climate change. China's commitment to expanding its mangrove coverage underscores its dedication to environmental sustainability and the preservation of vital natural resources.
