China has made significant strides in its ongoing battle against desertification by planting 2.67 million hectares of trees and grass over the past year. This achievement is part of the country's major greening initiative, official data revealed on Thursday.
The National Forestry and Grassland Administration announced at a recent conference that the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program (TSFP) has launched 56 new projects since June 2023. Notable projects are taking place in the Hunshandake and Maowusu sandy lands, key areas affected by desertification.
China faces severe desertification challenges, particularly in its northwest, north, and northeast regions, collectively known as the \"three-north.\" The TSFP, the world's largest afforestation program, was initiated in 1978 and is slated for completion by 2050. Its primary goal is to rehabilitate and green desert-prone and desertified lands in the \"three-north\" regions, contributing to environmental sustainability and economic stability.
