Chinese ‘Magic Grass’ Revolutionizes Mauritanian Farming

In a groundbreaking agricultural initiative, Zhang Hong'en brought a suitcase of grass seedlings from China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region to Mauritania in West Africa. These high-yield seedlings, known as giant Juncao (Pennisetum giganteum), have swiftly transformed the local farming landscape.

Within just 50 days, the grass grew taller than an average adult, and each seedling multiplied into a dozen tillers. Three months later, the plants soared to heights of 4 meters, providing an abundant and sustainable source of fodder for Mauritania's livestock.

Dubbed \"the grass of happiness\" by numerous countries, this innovative crop not only enhances the diet of local herds but also offers a promising solution for diversifying livestock feed. Zhang, director of the animal husbandry technology demonstration center in Mauritania, stated, \"Growing the grass in Mauritania will surely benefit farmers and herdsmen.\" This project exemplifies the positive impact of international cooperation in advancing agricultural practices and supporting sustainable farming communities.
