China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment is gearing up to introduce a comprehensive carbon footprint management system, furthering the nation's ambitious green agenda.
A carbon footprint encompasses the total greenhouse gas emissions generated by a product, individual, household, institution, or business. Specifically, a product carbon footprint accounts for emissions from production all the way through to disposal.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Ministry spokesperson Pei Xiaofei outlined the plan's key components. These include mobilizing various stakeholders, aligning with international standards, enhancing the calculation of product carbon footprints, and safeguarding property rights.
The plan also emphasizes accelerating research on carbon accounting methods for essential products like electricity, coal, and fuel oil. This research will underpin the accurate calculation of full life-cycle carbon footprints for downstream products, ensuring a solid foundation for China's sustainability efforts.
Experts believe that effective management of carbon footprints will be pivotal in helping China achieve its carbon reduction targets. The country has committed to peaking carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and attaining carbon neutrality by 2060.
