A devastating landslide in Papua New Guinea's Enga province has resulted in the loss of over 670 lives, according to an official from the International Organization for Migration.
Serhan Aktoprak, chief of the UN migration agency's mission in the South Pacific island nation, revealed that the disaster's impact is far more severe than initially estimated. In an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Aktoprak mentioned that more than 150 houses are believed to be buried under debris reaching six to eight meters deep.
The ongoing instability in the disaster zone has led to incessant rockfalls and continuous landslides, making the area extremely dangerous. As a result, approximately 1,250 survivors have been evacuated to safer locations to escape the relentless threats of further natural calamities.
The situation in Enga province remains critical, with rescue and relief efforts continuing amidst challenging conditions. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, offering support to the affected regions.
