A herd of 42 wild Asian elephants has been spotted in Mengla County, Yunnan Province, marking the largest group ever recorded in Mengban Town. The local monitoring team captured footage of this majestic sight, showcasing the elephants' peaceful descent from the mountains towards cornfields near the river.
Using drone infrared thermal imaging, the team observed three adult elephants gracefully making their way down before being joined by 39 additional elephants. This remarkable gathering signifies not only the rich biodiversity of Yunnan but also the effectiveness of the region’s wildlife monitoring efforts.
Earlier in April, a separate herd of 41 wild Asian elephants was seen near the Shangyong Protection Area, highlighting the thriving population in Mengla County. In response to these sightings, local government authorities have deployed elephant monitors to track and record the herd’s movements in real-time. This proactive approach ensures the safety of nearby villagers and promotes harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife.
As Mengla County continues to implement sustainable practices for wildlife conservation, these significant elephant gatherings serve as a testament to the region's commitment to preserving its natural heritage for future generations.
