Bahe River Revitalization: A New Chapter for Xi’an’s Ecosystem

The Bahe River, a significant tributary of the Yellow River spanning over 100 kilometers, winds its way through the bustling urban landscape of Xi'an City in Shaanxi Province, northwest China. This vital waterway serves as a crucial source of ecological and drinking water resources for the region.

Despite its importance, just a few years ago, the Bahe River faced severe challenges. The uncontrolled discharge of household sewage had transformed the once vibrant river into a stinky and heavily polluted body of water. The area surrounding the river, home to the Olympic Sports Center which hosted the 14th National Games, was a popular public spot for various activities, making the pollution problem even more concerning.

\"A large volume of polluted water flowed down the river, resulting in bad water quality, a foul smell, and the death of zooplankton in the river,\" said Feng Chuangmin, a key figure involved in the water quality improvement project for the river. \"Every year, during summer, in August, the river experiences increased pollution and eutrophication due to reduced water levels.\"

Thanks to dedicated ecological initiatives, the Bahe River has begun to regain its vitality. Efforts to control sewage discharge and implement sustainable water management practices have significantly improved water quality. The resurgence of the river has not only restored its ecological balance but has also rejuvenated the surrounding community spaces, allowing residents and visitors to once again enjoy this vital natural resource.
