Unveiling the Ancient Secrets of Baobab Trees: New Evolutionary Insights

A groundbreaking study on baobab trees has provided new insights into their origin and evolutionary journey. Conducted by the Wuhan Botanical Garden (WBG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in collaboration with the Sino-Africa Joint Research Center, the research was published in the esteemed journal Nature on Wednesday.

Baobab trees, iconic icons of Madagascar, are remarkable for their longevity, with some species living over 2,000 years. These giants offer vital resources such as food, water, and shelter to local communities, underscoring their significant cultural, economic, and ecological roles.

The study employed comprehensive genomic analyses on the whole genome sequences of all eight existing baobab species.
