Is Extreme Weather Becoming the ‘New Norm’ Globally?

As we reach the midpoint of 2024, extreme weather events are making headlines more frequently than ever, raising concerns about a shifting climate landscape. Millions across South and Southeast Asia are grappling with unprecedented heatwaves, with temperatures soaring to record highs.

In Bangladesh and the Philippines, soaring temperatures forced schools to suspend in-person classes during the last days of April, highlighting the severe impact of heat on daily life. Thailand is also facing intense heat, with Bangkok experiencing a heat index that surpassed 52°C on April 25. Tragically, heatstroke has claimed at least 30 lives in the country this year.

China's southern mega city of Guangzhou was not spared either. On April 27, a powerful tornado struck the city amidst days of severe convection weather, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and injuring 33 others.

Beyond Asia, Eastern Africa is experiencing its own set of challenges. Recent flooding and landslides have affected nearly a million people across Burundi, Kenya, Somalia, and Tanzania, leading to over 200 fatalities. These events underscore the urgent need for global strategies to mitigate and adapt to the escalating extremes of our changing climate.
