Mexico Battles ‘Exceptional’ Power Outages Amid Heat Wave

Recent unseasonably hot weather has led to widespread power outages affecting 20 of Mexico's 32 states, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced on Wednesday. Speaking at a regular government press conference, he assured consumers that the national grid holds sufficient generating capacity to prevent future disruptions.

President Lopez Obrador emphasized the government's commitment to collaborating with private power producers, who account for approximately half of Mexico's electricity generation. This partnership aims to bolster the nation's energy resilience against extreme weather events.

According to data from grid operator CENACE, Tuesday's rolling power outages were an unexpected occurrence despite a net national power demand of around 44.9 gigawatts (GW) on Wednesday morning, which was just below the net generation capacity of 45.0 GW.

\"This was something exceptional that was not expected,\" stated Lopez Obrador, highlighting the severity of the ongoing heat wave. \"But we're going to be very attentive to this special situation we're dealing with,\" he added, assuring the public of proactive measures to mitigate similar future incidents.
