From Rockets to Telescopes: China’s Science Sites Become Tourist Hotspots

Mega infrastructure and science projects in China have emerged as new popular destinations for tourists, especially during the bustling May Day holiday. From space launch sites to world-renowned telescopes, these landmarks offer visitors a unique glimpse into China's advancements in technology and science.

The Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan province, where China's Chang'e-6 lunar probe was launched on Friday, became a hotspot for holidaymakers. On the launch day alone, nearly 80,000 tourists flocked to the site to witness the event. At the adjacent Wenchang Aerospace Science Popularization Center, visitors watched the rocket launch on large outdoor screens and captured the moment with their mobile phones.

Nearby, Qishuiwan Beach offered additional attractions, with models of rockets and the moon set up for photo opportunities, alongside display boards featuring aerospace elements. These installations provided both entertainment and educational experiences for families and science enthusiasts.

In southwest Guizhou Province, Kedu Town in Pingtang County, home to the world's largest single-dish radio telescope, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), also known as the \"China Sky Eye,\" attracted numerous study tours focused on astronomy. Tourists, both domestic and international, visited to learn about and explore the capabilities of FAST firsthand.

Over the past few years, China's significant technological breakthroughs have transformed many of its scientific landmarks into must-visit sites. Wu Sa, deputy director of the Economic Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission, highlighted that the rising popularity of these locations reflects the pride of the Chinese people in their country's homegrown technological advancements.
