Guangzhou, a major hub in the Chinese mainland, faced significant disruptions this past Saturday as strong convective weather rolled in, causing extensive flight delays at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.
The severe weather not only brought thunderstorms and heavy downpours but also led to voltage fluctuations at a nearby power station. These fluctuations temporarily cut off part of the lighting system in Terminal 2. Fortunately, airport officials clarified that normal operations remained unaffected despite the power issues.
By 11:11 p.m. on Saturday, over 70 flights were delayed by more than an hour due to the adverse weather conditions. In response to the large-scale delays, the airport activated a yellow emergency response, aiming to mitigate the impact on travelers and ensure safety during the storm.
