Diabetes remains a leading cause of death and disability around the world, with 529 million people affected in 2021. The Lancet published a report in June 2023 projecting that this number could exceed 1.3 billion within the next 30 years, highlighting an alarming trend across all countries.
Camillo Ricordi, a professor at the University of Miami and the inventor of islet cell isolation, told CGTN that over 50 percent of diabetes cases can be prevented through proper nutrition and moderate physical exercise. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle to combat the rise of this chronic disease.
Ricordi also cautioned that prediabetes typically develops in individuals who already exhibit some insulin resistance and silent inflammation in their blood, underscoring the need for early detection and proactive health measures.
