Rare Black and Oriental White Storks Spotted at Hengshui Lake in North China

Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts have a reason to rejoice as Hengshui Lake National Nature Reserve in Hebei Province, north China, becomes the stage for a rare avian spectacle. Recently, a black stork and an oriental white stork were spotted hunting together—a sight unseen since 2018.

The oriental white stork, listed as 'endangered' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and the black stork, with approximately 1,000 individuals in China and under first-class state protection, rarely share feeding grounds. This unique occurrence highlights the positive strides made in conservation efforts at Hengshui Lake.

Since last year, the water quality of Hengshui Lake has improved significantly, transforming the shoal areas into thriving habitats for waterfowls. Currently, the lake is experiencing its peak season of migratory birds, serving as a crucial stopover and wintering ground on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. The reserve boasts the largest single water surface on the North China Plain, encompassing a diverse wetland ecosystem of swamps, waters, mudflats, meadows, and woodlands.

So far, nature reserve staff have observed and recorded 334 species of birds, underscoring Hengshui Lake's vital role in supporting biodiversity and migratory patterns across the region.
