February 2024 has been etched into history as the warmest February on record globally, marking the ninth consecutive month of unprecedented high temperatures. According to Europe’s climate monitor, climate change is propelling the world into \"uncharted territory.\"
The past year has been a tumultuous one for our planet, witnessing an onslaught of severe storms, crippling droughts, and devastating wildfires. Human-caused climate change, exacerbated by the naturally occurring El Niño weather phenomenon, has driven global temperatures to possibly the hottest levels in over 100,000 years.
The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) reported last month that the period from February 2023 to January 2024 marked the first time Earth endured 12 consecutive months with temperatures averaging 1.5 degrees Celsius hotter than the pre-industrial era.
This alarming trend persisted into February, which was recorded to be 1.77 degrees Celsius warmer than the monthly average for the pre-industrial period of 1850-1900, as detailed in C3S’s latest monthly update.
These enduring temperature highs underscore the urgent need for global action to combat climate change and its far-reaching impacts on ecosystems, economies, and communities worldwide.
