UN Allocates $17M to Combat Drought Crisis in Northern Ethiopia

The United Nations has taken a significant step to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in northern Ethiopia by allocating $17 million through the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

Undersecretary-General Martin Griffiths emphasized the urgent need for this funding in response to the severe El Nino-driven drought affecting the Afar, Amhara, and Tigray regions. This drought has intensified food insecurity, putting over 10 million Ethiopians at risk during the upcoming July-to-September lean season.

\"Food insecurity is only set to increase in the coming months,\" warned the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The situation is further exacerbated by ongoing hostilities and the looming threat of flooding, which could compound the hardships faced by vulnerable communities.

The allocated funds aim to provide immediate relief through food assistance and support long-term resilience against climate-related challenges. This intervention underscores the UN's commitment to mitigating the impacts of climate change and conflict on some of the world's most vulnerable populations.
