Sydney’s Asbestos Scare Broadens: 32 Sites Contaminated Amid Cleanup Efforts

Australian authorities have uncovered asbestos contamination in 32 sites across Sydney, marking the largest investigation by the state's Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in decades. The initial discovery was made in January when asbestos was found in a playground in the New South Wales capital. Subsequent tests revealed the presence of bonded asbestos in recycled mulch near the park, which is situated above an underground road interchange.

The EPA's extensive efforts have now identified additional contaminated locations, including a public school and park in the northern part of the city, two residential estates under construction in the south-west, and the University of Sydney, which is set to undergo testing this weekend. Other affected areas include transport projects, a primary school, a warehouse, and a hospital.

In response to these findings, EPA head Tony Chappel assured the public that remediation resources are in place to address any necessary cleanups. This reassurance comes as pop superstar Taylor Swift prepares to hold a concert in the city's west next weekend, with authorities confirming that the event will proceed despite nearby asbestos concerns.

Since January 10, the EPA has collected nearly 300 samples throughout the city, with 10 percent testing positive for asbestos. The ongoing cleanup efforts aim to ensure public safety and restore affected areas swiftly.
