Innovative Method Boosts Tree Genetic Cloning Efficiency

A multinational research team has pioneered an efficient method for genetic cloning of trees, marking a significant advancement in sustainable forestry and agriculture. Led by Tel Aviv University (TAU) and the Volcani Institute in central Israel, the team detailed their breakthrough in an eight-year study published in Nature Biotechnology last Sunday.

The new technique enhances the traditional stem cuttings method, where tree branches are cut, treated to promote root growth, and then planted to develop into new, independent plants. This asexual reproduction strategy bypasses the need for seeds, allowing for the rapid multiplication of trees with desirable traits such as improved fruit taste and increased resistance to dryness and diseases.

Despite its potential, genetic cloning has faced challenges, particularly its economic feasibility and limited rooting success rates, which often do not exceed 50 percent even with the application of plant hormones like auxin. The innovation introduced by the TAU-led team addresses these issues, offering a more reliable and cost-effective solution for propagating trees on a larger scale.

This advancement holds promise for various applications, including reforestation projects, agricultural improvements, and the conservation of endangered tree species. By enabling the mass production of trees with specific characteristics, the method could significantly impact global efforts towards sustainable development and environmental resilience.
