Japan Invests $7.7M in Soil Cleanup at Fukuoka’s Former US Base

Japan's Fukuoka Airport authorities have allocated approximately 1.14 billion yen, equivalent to over $7.7 million, in fiscal year 2022 to address soil contamination at the site of a former U.S. military base. This significant investment highlights Japan's commitment to environmental remediation and public health.

Between 2015 and 2021, inspections conducted by Japan's land ministry and other organizations detected substantial amounts of benzene and lead along the fuel transportation pipeline from the former U.S. military base area located in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City. These contaminants pose serious risks to the local environment and community, prompting urgent countermeasures.

The cleanup efforts involve removing and treating contaminated soil to prevent further environmental degradation and ensure the safety of residents and visitors to Fukuoka Airport. This initiative not only reflects proactive environmental management but also addresses the lingering impacts of past military activities on the local ecosystem.
