China Establishes New Flood and Drought Control Headquarters for Liaohe River Basin
In a significant move to enhance water resource management, China inaugurated the flood control and drought relief headquarters for the Liaohe River basin on Saturday. The basin, which stretches across Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Jilin, and Liaoning, is one of the nation's seven largest rivers and a critical agricultural and industrial hub.
The newly established headquarters is tasked with guiding and coordinating flood and drought control efforts not only within the Liaohe River basin but also across neighboring basins along the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea. This initiative aims to ensure the safety of lives, protect property, and maintain water supply stability in the region.
Li Guoying, the Minister of Water Resources, emphasized the importance of strengthening risk warning systems and emergency management capabilities. \"Our priority is to safeguard lives and property while ensuring a stable water supply,\" Li stated. He highlighted the need for enhanced preparedness and responsive measures to effectively tackle the challenges posed by extreme weather events.
The Liaohe River basin's strategic significance lies in its robust agricultural output and thriving industrial activities. By establishing this headquarters, China aims to bolster its ability to manage water-related risks, thereby supporting sustained economic growth and ensuring the well-being of communities dependent on the river basin.
