Gibbon Guardians: Protecting Yunnan’s Endangered Singers

The western black-crested gibbons, known for their unique and melodic calls, have become cherished residents of the Wuliang Mountains in southwest China's Yunnan Province. Local village elders believe that the roar of these gibbons brings mild weather and protects the area from natural disasters.

Forest ranger Xiong Youfu is at the forefront of protecting these precious animals. Passionate about conservation, Xiong has been teaching his son to recognize and mimic the gibbons' calls. This effort not only strengthens their bond with the wildlife but also enhances their ability to safeguard the gibbons from threats.

The western black-crested gibbon is a critically endangered species, with their habitats spanning across Yunnan Province, Laos, and Vietnam. As China intensifies its focus on animal protection, more people are becoming interested in the plight of these remarkable primates.

\"Understanding and mimicking the gibbons' calls helps us monitor their well-being and ensures that we can respond quickly to any threats they face,\" says Xiong Youfu.

Join us in our Journeys in Nature series to delve deeper into the lives of the gibbons and the dedicated individuals working tirelessly to protect them in the deep forests.
