30 Years of Women’s Empowerment: How ‘SHE’ Keeps the Fire Alive

Thirty years after the UN Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, and the adoption of the landmark Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, China is hosting the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women once again. To mark this moment, CGTN's special program 'SHE' brings together women leaders and cultural icons for a heartfelt reunion.

On the new journey of Chinese modernization, every woman is a protagonist, and 'SHE' puts that idea center stage. From Irina Bokova, former UNESCO Director-General, to Gertrude Mongella, the first president of the Beijing conference, the lineup crosses continents. Chinese short-track speed skater Yang Yang and ballet star Tan Yuanyuan add personal stories of resilience and creative passion.

Over the past three decades, global gender equality has seen both gains and challenges. The Beijing Declaration set 12 critical areas for action, from education and health to power and decision-making. Today, data shows that women have made significant strides in education, with girls enrolling in universities at record rates in many G20 nations, but gaps remain in leadership and economic participation.

In 'SHE', participants debate questions like: how do we turn policy into real-world impact? What role does culture play in shaping gender norms? And how can we support the next generation of women changemakers? Their shared insights show progress powered by collaboration and conviction.

As China charts its modernization journey, 'SHE' offers a powerful reminder that empowerment is an ongoing story, and it needs every voice to keep the fire alive.
