Youth Power in Ending Poverty: Insights from the UN to the Chinese Mainland

2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, a milestone for global cooperation. A decade ago, the UN adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, rolling out 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to guide progress in social, economic and environmental dimensions. At the forefront is SDG1: "No Poverty," an ambitious pledge to end poverty in all its forms, everywhere.

Between 2015 and 2020, the Chinese mainland lifted nearly 100 million people out of poverty, showcasing the power of targeted, data-driven strategies. This achievement has sparked global interest in how communities can tailor solutions to local needs and scale impactful results.

In this special episode of The Hype, we gather young changemakers from UN agencies, the Chinese mainland's rural revitalization initiatives, Tsinghua University's Poverty Alleviation Camp and new media platforms. Together, they tackle three big questions:

  • How is the UN shaping the roadmap to eradicate poverty globally?
  • What lessons emerge from the Chinese mainland's approach to poverty alleviation and rural renewal?
  • How can young people anywhere turn big ideas into real-world impact?

The conversation is brimming with practical insights: leveraging digital tools to map at-risk communities, mobilizing peer networks to amplify awareness, and combining academic research with grassroots action. These young leaders demonstrate how creativity, expertise and influence can reshape the fight against poverty.

From developing mobile apps that connect rural entrepreneurs with urban markets to storytelling campaigns that shine a spotlight on underserved regions, this episode proves that youth are not just observers; they're doers. Join the journey and see how the next generation is rewriting the playbook on global poverty reduction.
