Global Snowman Challenge Sparks Winter Games Excitement in Harbin

HARBIN, CHINA — As temperatures drop, creativity heats up. CGTN's viral snowman-building challenge, launched to promote the 9th Asian Winter Games, has transformed into a cross-continental celebration of winter sports and cultural connection. Participants from over 50 countries and regions have shared frosty creations, showcasing everything from traditional snowmen to ice sculptures honoring their national sports icons.

The initiative culminates February 11 with a live showdown at Harbin's Sun Island, where international teams will collaborate with winter sports athletes and media representatives. 'This isn't just about snow—it's about building bridges through shared passion,' said event organizer Li Wei, as workers prepared the 40,000 sqm activity zone.

Harbin, dubbed 'China's Ice City,' leverages its -20°C winters to boost engagement for the upcoming Games. The event aligns with China's push for winter sports participation, which saw over 300 million regular participants as of 2023, according to official statistics.

'My snowman wears a Philippine flag scarf and ski goggles,' shared Manila-based participant Maria Santos via video conference. 'It's amazing how cold weather unites us.'

Organizers confirm the final creations will be displayed throughout the Asian Winter Games, scheduled for late February. Follow #SnowmanShowdown for real-time updates from the frosty frontlines.
