Fujian Unveils Majestic Wood Carving Celebrating China’s Grand Canal

Celebrating a decade since the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Fujian Province has embarked on an extraordinary artistic journey. In April 2023, a dedicated team led by Zheng Chunhui, a renowned inheritor of Putian wood carving—a national intangible cultural heritage—began crafting a monumental wood carving of the historic canal.

This awe-inspiring artwork is formed from nine majestic camphor trees, each over 500 years old. The carvings intricately depict the bustling canal transportation and the rich cultural landscapes of the cities that flourished along its banks. By blending traditional craftsmanship with historical narrative, the project not only preserves ancient techniques but also celebrates the enduring legacy of the Grand Canal in shaping China's economic and cultural development.

As the five-year project progresses, it stands as a testament to the dedication of artisans in keeping China's heritage alive. Visitors to Fujian can look forward to experiencing this grand tribute, which beautifully encapsulates the spirit and significance of one of the world's oldest and longest canals.
