Bangladesh Nears Completion of South Asia’s First Underwater Tunnel

In a monumental achievement for infrastructure in South Asia, Bangladesh is on the verge of completing the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, the region's first under-river tunnel. Stretching 3.4 kilometers, this engineering marvel is set to transform connectivity by linking the main city and port on the western side of the Karnaphuli River with its eastern counterpart.

Complementing the tunnel is a 5.35-kilometer approach road and a 727-meter bridge, ensuring seamless travel and boosting economic activities in the region. The project, spearheaded by China Communications Construction Company, has drawn attention for its scale and innovation.

Recently, CGTN reporter Wu Bin visited the tunnel alongside dedicated employees, offering an exclusive glimpse into the final stages of construction. This infrastructure project not only signifies progress for Bangladesh but also sets a precedent for future underwater tunnels in South Asia.
