Swedish Farmer Plants Roots in Dali with No-Till Farming

In early 2025, Swedish native Patrick Bachstätter returned to the Chinese mainland and made his home in Dali, Yunnan. He rented a plot at the foot of Cangshan Mountain to practice "no-till" natural farming, a method that initially drew local curiosity.

Over the months, his dedication and respect for the land won over neighbours. This year, he celebrated a major milestone: obtaining China's Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card, a symbol of belonging that confirmed his place in the community.

In autumn 2025, Patrick and his father embarked on a 4,500-kilometre road trip across the Chinese mainland. From mountain villages to bustling cities, the journey deepened his appreciation for the warmth and diversity of local life.

Now, as 2025 draws to a close, he reflects on a year of growth both on the farm and at home. For Patrick and his family, Dali has become more than a new address, it's a place where his daughter can grow up surrounded by the beauty and hospitality of this land.

Looking ahead to 2026, Patrick says he's excited to see both his crops and his connection to this community flourish year by year.
