Exclusive Footage: Knife Attack Near Taipei MRT Leaves 3 Dead, 9 Injured

Exclusive footage shared by CGTN Stringer captures the chaos near two Taipei Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations, where a 27-year-old suspect unleashed a smoke grenade and a knife attack, leaving at least three dead and nine wounded this week.

In the video, commuters are seen sprinting for cover as grey smoke fills the platform. Bystanders worked together to evacuate the injured before emergency responders arrived on the scene. According to Taiwan authorities, the suspect then fled to a nearby building and died by suicide, jumping from a height before officers could intervene.

Initial reports suggest the attacker targeted random passersby during the evening commute. Hospitals across the city treated victims for deep lacerations and smoke inhalation. The three fatalities, two women and one man, were residents of Taiwan.

Taiwan authorities have opened a full investigation into the motive behind the assault, reviewing security camera footage and eyewitness testimonies. As a precaution, enhanced patrols and bag checks are now in place at major MRT stations.

This tragic event highlights vulnerabilities in crowded urban transit systems. For young global citizens and digital nomads heading to the Taiwan region, staying informed on local safety updates and carrying emergency contacts can be crucial.

We will continue to monitor developments and share updates as Taiwan authorities release more information.
