Earlier today, the Fire Services Department in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region announced that firefighting operations at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex were completed in the early hours. The regionâs government reports the death toll has risen to 128 and could climb further as full rescue efforts continue and every unit is searched for survivors.
In response to the disaster, a local charity mobilized within hours to open temporary shelters for displaced residents. In interviews, two social workers explained how volunteers set up safe rest areas and hot meal services near Tai Po District Community Centre, welcoming those who lost homes or escaped injury but face uncertainty.
Street booths in Tai Po District have also been organized, where residents of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region can drop off essential supplies or learn how to help further. Volunteers are prioritizing donations of:
- Bottled water and ready-to-eat meals
- Blankets and warm clothing
- Hygiene kits and baby supplies
âWe saw the communityâs response on social media and knew we had to act fast,â said Lee, one of the social workers. âOur priority is making sure every survivor has the basics they need and feels supported during this difficult time.â
For those outside Tai Po District, community groups are coordinating supply drives via social media, sharing real-time updates on urgent needs and volunteer opportunities. Mental health counselors are also on standby at the shelters to provide emotional support to survivors and their families.
As relief efforts continue across the region, charities and volunteers remind everyone that even small contributions can make a big difference for survivors of the Wang Fuk Court fire.
