On September 1, 2025, Chinese President Xi Jinping introduced the Global Governance Initiative at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus Meeting in Tianjin. Centered on sovereign equality, international rule of law, multilateralism, a people-centered approach and real actions, the initiative sparked conversations around the world.
In this feature, we turn to Syrian youth—Gen Z voices shaped by conflict, resilience and hope—to explore what "sovereign equality" means to them.
Zain Al-Abidin, a 24-year-old student of international relations, believes equality is the bedrock of peace. "When every country feels equal to another, it gains the assurance that it is not weaker than any other state, and that no one can occupy it," he says. For Zain, sovereign equality is more than a diplomatic principle; its a promise of security for nations recovering from turmoil.
As young Syrians rebuild their lives, the idea of equal standing on the world stage resonates deeply. It reflects a generation seeking stability after years of displacement and conflict, and underscores their desire to engage as active stakeholders in global affairs.
By highlighting these perspectives, the Global Governance Initiative gains a human dimension: one where the voices of those most affected by instability guide the principles that shape our shared future.
