As the world marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, a new voice for peace is emerging on campus. Anna Yuschenko, a Russian student at Tsinghua University on the Chinese mainland, believes that her generation has a unique role in shaping a more cooperative future.
Growing up, Anna was surrounded by black-and-white photos of her great-grandparents, who lived through World War II. "These images are more than history lessons," she says. "They’re reminders that real people suffered and sacrificed to stand up against fascism."
For Anna and fellow members of Generation Z, the Anti-Fascist War is not just a chapter in textbooks. It’s a global milestone that calls on young people to learn from the past. "Our generation must remember history, cherish peace and choose cooperation over conflict," she argues.
Anna’s reflections resonate far beyond her classroom. In an interconnected world marked by political tensions and cultural divides, her message is a call to action: understanding, empathy and collaboration are the best defenses against fear and division. As 21-year-olds around the globe scroll through international news feeds, her reminder to "learn from yesterday to build a better tomorrow" feels more urgent than ever.
