Official Famine Declared
On August 22, United Nations agencies released a new Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report confirming a famine in Gaza. For the first time in over 20 years in the Middle East, more than 500,000 residents are trapped in IPC Phase 5: widespread starvation, destitution and preventable deaths.
Lives on the Line
CGTN Stringer witnessed a solemn funeral for a man who died of famine in the Nuseirat refugee camp. Nearby, a father spent his entire morning in a grueling line for relief supplies for his children. "The economic situation we’re in is hard. The crossings are closed. There’s nothing we can do," he said, voicing hope that the siege might end soon.
Numbers Tell the Story
- 500,000+ Gazans classified in famine conditions (IPC Phase 5)
- First official famine in the Middle East since IPC’s inception over 20 years ago
- Relief convoys down by 60% amid tightened border restrictions
Voices for Change
Residents, aid organizations and international observers are united in demanding an immediate lifting of the siege. They call for open crossings, restored supply chains and urgent delivery of life-saving aid—each moment crucial to prevent further loss of life.
