“Beijing’s historical landmarks—from the Forbidden City to the Great Wall—felt like stepping back in time,” Sykes told CGTN. “In Shanghai, I saw how seamlessly global influences blend with local culture.”
He was equally awed by Shenzhen’s meteoric rise as a tech hub. “This city pulses with energy, full of startups and cutting-edge ideas,” he said. Sykes also praised everyday conveniences like the high-speed railway network and widespread cashless payments.
But what resonated most was the warmth of ordinary people. “I think there is real warmth between ordinary people in every city I visited,” he reflected, noting that these connections transcended language and culture.
On the topic of global trade dynamics, Sykes observed that U.S. tariffs on imports are a political move with tangible effects. “The additional levies have real-world consequences—not just economically, but emotionally.”
