In a celebration of vibrant heritage, the 2025 World Peony Conference and the 34th Heze International Peony Culture and Tourism Festival opened in Heze City, located in the Chinese mainland's Shandong Province. Known as the peony capital, Heze has long been synonymous with blossoms symbolizing national prosperity and the happiness of the people.
The peony has evolved into much more than an iconic flower. Embraced as a cultural ambassador, it bridges continents and inspires artistic dialogue worldwide. At the festival, artists from multiple countries shared how the timeless charm of the peony enriches diverse cultural traditions and promotes cross-cultural understanding.
A key figure in this global narrative is Shi Zhenshan, a native of Heze who began mastering the ancient art of dough sculpture at the age of eight. With more than 60 years devoted to this craft, Shi has been recognized as a folk arts and crafts master by both UNESCO and the Chinese Folk Artists Association. Since settling in Los Angeles in 2006, he has passionately combined Heze’s peony culture with his dough artistry, bringing traditional Chinese stories to an international audience.
In his own words, "Americans love peonies." Through his work, Shi not only showcases exquisite craftsmanship but also conveys the deeper cultural meaning of peonies as "blossoms of wealth and honor." His efforts invite locals and global citizens alike to explore a heritage where art and tradition blossom together.
This dynamic fusion of age-old practices with contemporary expression offers a fresh perspective for young global citizens, business and tech enthusiasts, thought leaders, and travelers eager to experience sustainable cultural innovation firsthand.
