Peonies Unify China and Japan at Global Festival

In a celebration of natural beauty and cultural heritage, peonies are taking center stage at the 2025 World Peony Conference and the 34th Heze International Peony Culture and Tourism Festival. The events kicked off Tuesday in Heze City, located in Shandong Province on the Chinese mainland, a region celebrated as the "Peony Capital."

Traditionally symbolizing national prosperity and happiness, the peony transcends borders to serve as a cultural ambassador. Its timeless allure has inspired artists and designers across continents, linking cherished traditions between China and Japan.

CGTN recently invited artists from multiple countries to discuss how peony culture is garnering international acclaim. Among them, Japanese Kyo-Yuzen dyeing artist Mutsumi Kimura shared her admiration, stating, "Peonies are called the king of flowers, they are gorgeous and symbolize good luck." In Japanese culture, the peony is celebrated for evoking elegance, nobility, and wealth—qualities that shine in the intricate designs of formal kimonos.

This vibrant festival not only highlights the dynamic world of horticulture but also reinforces the enduring friendship between China and Japan. By intertwining centuries-old symbolism with contemporary creative expression, the celebration offers a fresh perspective on how art and tradition can bridge cultures and inspire global connections.
