Anna Paula Peralta Reyes, a dedicated Peruvian youth, has been embracing her multicultural heritage by celebrating Chinese New Year in Lima’s bustling Chinatown. Having studied at a Chinese school in Peru for 11 years, Anna deepened her understanding of Chinese culture before furthering her education at Jilin University in China.
During her time in China, Anna not only immersed herself in the rich traditions but also built meaningful friendships with local residents, fostering a bridge between her Peruvian roots and Chinese heritage. This blend of cultures is vividly showcased in Lima’s Chinatown, where Anna recently visited to experience the vibrant festivities of the Spring Festival.
The streets of Chinatown were adorned with striking red decorations, including red envelopes known as hong baos, spring couplets, and ornaments celebrating the year’s zodiac animal, the snake. The lively ambiance and colorful displays highlighted the deep-seated traditions of the Spring Festival, resonating with Anna’s own cultural experiences.
Reflecting on the event, Anna shared, “It's the perfect moment to feel the joy of a culture that, despite the distance, feels closer than ever!” Her enthusiasm underscores the enduring connection between diverse cultures and the universal celebration of new beginnings.
