South Africa Launches Avocado Exports to China with 22-Tonne Shipment

In a significant milestone for South African agriculture, August 2024 saw the country become the third African nation, following Kenya and Tanzania, to gain eligibility for exporting fresh avocados to China. This achievement marks a new chapter in the agricultural trade relations between the two countries.

On October 10, Shanghai's Yangshan Port received the first shipment of 22 tonnes of South African avocados. This initial batch not only highlights the quality and demand for South African produce but also sets the stage for future exports, catering to the growing appetite for avocados among Chinese consumers.

A CGTN stringer engaged with several South Africans to estimate the number of avocados in this shipment and to discuss the most popular South African products among Chinese consumers. Hendrik Snyman, a South African resident, shared his views on the promising future of Sino-South African cooperation. Snyman emphasized the potential for growth in the tourism sector and the emergence of new business opportunities that could benefit both nations.

This development is expected to enhance economic ties and open new avenues for entrepreneurs and businesses in both South Africa and China. As the export of avocados paves the way for increased agricultural trade, it also fosters stronger bilateral relationships and mutual growth.
